Create A Fan Base and Grow Your Business With Twitter

Twitter is best used to share timely news and events like workshops, classes, and conferences that you may either be hosting or attending. You can also communicate your availability to potential clients as well as share your favorite products like books, videos, and sex toys to your followers.

Let’s explore a few basics of the platform, the most important being the actual look and feel of your profile page. This is one of the most valuable and often overlooked resources available to you on Twitter. If you do this correctly you can quickly establish your visual brand identity from the start.

Every account includes 19 default background designs. You’ll find these in the “settings” section of Twitter under “design”. If you scroll down a little further you’ll see an option to customize your background. This is where you can upload a custom designed background.

Another option is outsourcing the work to a graphic designer.,, or all can used to locate a designer. I suggest you start with Fivrr; it’s $5!

Your Recipe for The Perfect Business-Driven Twitter Profile

Your profile must have these 3 key elements:

  1. A Twitter handle (identifier name) that reflects your brand - this is the name people will use to locate you. Keep in mind you’re limited to 15 characters so choose wisely.
  2. Use a background image that reflects your visual brand identity. Opt for elegant, clean, simple yet impactful, over busy and cluttered.
  3. Make sure all of your pertinent information (contact info, your name or stage name and perhaps an additional image) is located inside your profile box.

Once you have a great visual identity it’s time to shift focus to the principles of engagement that will build your audience, grow your following, and attract great opportunities.

The Power of Relationships

Ever heard that saying about being judged by the company you keep?

Who you choose to follow makes a statement about who chooses to follow you in return.

Regardless if you’re just getting started on Twitter or you’ve used the platform for a while, it’s not a bad idea to go through your current list of followers (as well as the people you’re following) and examine if any of them fit into either of the following four categories.

  1. People you admire (influencers) within your industry. You want to get on their radar
  2. Potential clients or business related opportunities you would like to explore
  3. News and information sources to stay abreast of changes in your industry
  4. Colleagues you’d like to support

I suggest you strive for a blend of all four. Keep in mind that everyone you follow may not fall into one of the four categories, but for those you do make sure their posts are relevant to you and your brand. Think of yourself as curator and don’t be afraid to unfollow people that don’t fit your brand.

Show your love by retweeting and favoriting - especially the influencers

Influencers are quite easy to spot on Twitter. They typically have way more followers than people they follow back. Even if they never follow you back it’s good to keep up with the things they’re talking about. Plus you’ll find tons of information to retweet to your followers

The goal is to get on their radar so when you have something really valuable to share they may return the favor. One re-tweet from a heavily followed influencer can mean tons of interest in you and your projects.

The fastest way to accomplish this? Start retweeting their tweets. Explore their twitter profile regularly, making special note of key events that you know they would appreciate your added support in spreading the word.

Another simple tool is favoriting their tweets. Below every individual tweet you’ll see an option to “Favorite” a post. You should do this with everyone you want to create and/or build up an relationship with. Also, don’t shy about asking others to re-tweet your tweets for you. You can do this simply by adding, "Pls RT!" to your post.

Crafting Tweets That Get Retweeted

For those not familiar with Twitter, you’re limited to 140 characters to convey your message. That includes spaces, urls you want to share, twitter handles, and hashtags. The key to crafting great tweets is be super clear on the essence of the core message you want to share.

What’s your goal?

In order for your tweets to be effective you must have a goal before you write. Ask yourself: What do I want the reader of this tweet to do? What action do I want them to take? If the goal is to direct the reader to a specific blog post (either yours or someone elses) make sure your message conveys that clearly so reader knows what to expect to find upon arrival. In other words, what’s on the other side of the tweet?

Let’s say you stumble upon a great tweet that reads, “How To Protect Yourself From Creepy Clients," along with a link. All you have to do is click on the ‘retweet’ link and presto! The tweet is shared to your followers. You can do this with articles you find outside of Twitter as well by finding the little "share" buttons on the edges or the bottom of the article in question.

Helping more people “discover” your tweet

Twitter has a wonderful system designed to automatically turn specific words (often referred to as keywords) into searchable topics. Twitter refers to them as Hashtags. A hashtag is word or phrase preceded by a hash mark or pound sign (#). They are used to identify messages on a specific topic.

Let’s say you have an article on your blog on the subject of couples in order to increase the amount of viewers that may see your tweet you want to use the relationship in your tweet, but in order to make it active you want to add to hash mark or pound sign (#) in front the word.

Here is an example:
“Looking for a gorgeous New York #escort? Click here to view my new #Slixa profile [LINK]”

By placing a pound sign in front of the selected keyword, you turn the word into a hashtag. Anyone looking for specific tweets with the word #escort or #Slixa in it will find your tweet. Note: If you’d like to hashtag a phrase (Sensual Massage Los Angeles) you need to write it as one word (#sensualmassagelosangeles).

You have two primary goals when crafting your tweet:

  1.  Making sure the “right” people see it. The use of hashtags is Twitters way of helping you accomplish this, but you can overdo it, so use the feature thoughtfully. One or two per tweet is plenty.
  2. Features one primary web link where you can direct your reader for further engagement - either to your website, affiliate product, registration for your event, etc.

Building Relationships Beyond Twitter

Twitter is a great way to connect, but if you want to do business with someone, you need to get it off the internet and launch into a real live conversation.

Remember the profile box? Make sure your web address is posted in that box, keeping in mind any web links you place inside this box becomes clickable (so test your links after you publish to make sure they work).

If someone starts a conversation with you by replying to one of your tweets (or vice versa), reciprocate quickly by responding as soon as possible. Keep in mind, Twitter does not release your private email address but you can DM (direct message) another follower within the platform.

Automating Your Twitter Activities:

Hootsuite is a wonderful free tool you can use for automating the delivery of your tweets. I think one of the best features of Hootsuite is that you can pre-schedule individual tweets days, weeks, even months in advance. There’s also a paid version that allows perform bulk scheduling but that’s a different lesson. Visit the website to learn more.

Another option is Tweetdeck. It does basically the same thing as Hootsuite but you have to load the software onto your computer’s hard drive.
